Rosé and Ruby Hues: A Sparkling Tasting Experience

3 PAIRINGS OF RESPONSIBLY SOURCED ROSÉ WINE & RUBY HUED GEMSTONES

A ROSÉ SEASON THAT LITERALLY SPARKLES!

What do gemstones and wine have in common? They are both expressive of “terroir” - of the earth!

Just as elements in the soil determine the way a wine tastes, minerals present in the earth (when a gemstone was formed) impact the way it looks.

In collaboration with celebrated chef Rob Guimond and Emi Guimond of Public Display of Affection, we present…

ROSÉ X RUBY HUES

This tasting was of small-production rosé wines from around the world, paired with responsibly sourced ruby-hued gemstones, also from around the world! As each pairing was passed around the table, each person discovered the dynamic qualities of the wine and gems.

GUESTS WERE CHALLENGED TO GUESS THE RUBY!

The goal of these experiences is to create community and delight - and expand what to know and questions to ask about responsible sourcing for both jewelry and wine.

AND… there was epic culinary magic that kept coming out of Rob’s kitchen!

WHAT DOES RESPONSIBLY SOURCED MEAN?

The phrase “sustainable jewelry” is loosely thrown around across industries. It is problematic for many reasons beyond ambiguity and overuse - it may not mean what you think.

Responsibly sourced is a better, more holistic goal. Beyond ethical and conflict-free, this practice encompasses:

  • traceability and transparency

  • protecting people and their skills

  • protecting the natural environment - be it land or sea

This conversation is ever-evolving and responsible sourcing looks different in Australia, versus Columbia, versus Kenya. Similarly, the women jewelry designers whose work you see here practice responsible sourcing differently.

For example, some work with post-consumer recycled diamonds and colored gemstones. Another designer prominently features artisanally mined colored gemstones from East Africa - often knowing the individual men and women who mined her gemstones. When sourcing a gemstone to restore a treasured heirloom, I work with trusted partners who provide as much information as possible about each gem.

THE PROVENANCE OF A GEMSTONE

One of my partners is, Nomad’s. Each gemstone is accompanied by a Provenance Report. This report discloses its origin in 4 possible levels of traceability. Each level corresponds with the degree of certainty we have with the information and history of the stone.

A sample report outlining details of a single Nomad’s gemstone, as well as the history of origin and traceability story.

PRECIOUS METALS

For precious metals, this can mean using certified post-consumer recycled gold - or a step further is mercury-free Fairmined gold.

WHAT IS FAIRMINED GOLD?

Just as we choose Fairtrade food, wine, and fashion, why not the gold in the jewelry we choose? Read on for a comparison between recycled gold and Fairmined gold…
