WHO ARE MINOAN WOMEN?

Ancient Power Women who enjoyed positions of great honor, alongside men.

Ancient Minoan Women Power Women

MINOAN POWER WOMEN

Ancient Minoan women may have enjoyed a higher level of respect and opportunity than was possible in almost any other ancient culture. Female goddesses and priestesses were highly visible, possibly dominant - and would have been revered in the same way that a sports team is identified with their mascot. They certainly would have been worshiped as mother goddesses - having authority over everything that mattered!

This fresco was made around 1525 - 1450 BC and can be seen at the The Met Museum.

Ancient Minoan Gold Signet Ring

ANCIENT MINOAN SIGNET RING

While Minoan women were always held in high regard, they did not rule the roost. They are depicted in positions of great honor and would appear alongside men. Examples of this are found in carved signet rings. Signet rings served as stamps of ownership and identity - and, according to Bettany Hughes, even speculated as the Bronze Age equivalent of a credit card! Thus, making it the first PowerJewel.

This gold signet ring is from an excavation of the Mycenaean cemetery at Aidonia in Greece, dated 1500 - 1200 BC.
